Model will replace five different types of helicopters currently in service in the three French armed forces

Airbus Helicopters has started flight testing of the new military helicopter H160M Guépard, specially developed for the French Armed Forces. The aircraft is part of a unified program aimed at equipping the Army, Navy, and Air Force with a common light helicopter platform.

The French Ministry of the Armed Forces plans to order 169 units of the H160M, which will replace five different types of helicopters currently in operation or recently retired.

Based on the civilian H160 model — already in operation for more than three years — the H160M has been extensively modified to meet military requirements. Named Guépard (“cheetah” in French), the helicopter incorporates advances that place it among the most modern in its category worldwide.

Accelerated development with multiple prototypes

To speed up the certification and testing process, Airbus is producing three prototypes of the H160M. The first will be used for flight tests and weapon trials scheduled for 2026. The second prototype — currently in final assembly — will undergo evaluations in extreme heat and cold conditions. Details about the third have not yet been disclosed.

“The H160M is an aircraft prepared for future missions: reliable, agile, highly connected, and equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and weapons. Above all, it is scalable and adaptable to constantly evolving operational environments,” said the CEO of Airbus Helicopters.

Advanced onboard technology and drone integration

Weighing 6 tons, the H160M is powered by two Safran Arrano engines and features 68 patents focused on operational efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. It is equipped with Thales FlytX avionics and an exclusive Airbus mission control system, providing the crew with broad situational awareness in complex operations.

Advanced communications allow full integration in air, sea, and land missions. The model is also the first Airbus helicopter with a standard system for drone interaction.

Among the onboard sensors are the Safran electro-optical system Euroflir 410 and the Thales radar AirMaster C. The self-defense complex covers the entire electromagnetic and optical spectrum, automatically identifying threats.

Modular and versatile armament

The HForce weapon system allows the H160M to operate a wide range of armaments. The helicopter can be equipped with 12.7 mm machine guns in pods, guided missiles, and 7.62 mm machine guns mounted on side mounts or articulated ramps for precision firing.

Deliveries to France are expected by end of 2028. Airbus will also be responsible for fleet maintenance and operational support during the first ten years of service.
